Punk Fashion
Punk fashion is not only the clothing but the tattoos, jewelry, hairstyles, cosmetics and body modifications.
Punk fashion is often debated as there is such a wide variation, ranging from Vivienne Westwoods fashion designs, to bands like The Sex Pistols. The distinct punk music and art movements often influenced punk fashion itself including, skinheads rude boys and mods. Many punks use clothing as a way of making a statement.
Mainstream punk fashion became well known by well-established fashion designer such as Jean Paul Gautier, Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood bringing it into the spotlight. Punk clothing was usually hand made and adapted to create the unique statement look they were looking for as it was not available on the mainstream market. Punks cut up old clothes and destroyed the fabric to mutilate it and creaste a garment designed to attract as much attention as possible. However in 1980 some punk items became mass produced and sold in specialty shops
Tops with naughty logos and slogans were hugely popular to show rebellion against the mainstream culture. As were studs, tartan, slogans, safety pins, chains and even razor blades.
Art and design, for example slogans, is used to communicate ideas and meanings.
